Job Title: Advocacy and Advice Worker

Location: Guildford

Salary: £25,550 per annum

Job Type: Full time, Permanent

The Organisation is a Disabled Person’s organisation that provides advocacy, information, advice and support throughout the county of Surrey.

They provide a range of services including Independent Health Complaints Advocacy and support to people who are arranging and managing their own social care support.

As part of their ongoing development they seek to recruit an Advocacy and Advice Worker to join their established team.

Job Purpose:

  • Provide Independent Health Complaints Advocacy in line with current legislation and guidelines
  • Assist Self Funders, Direct Payment recipients and NHS Personal Budget holders to set up and successfully operate their Self-Managed Care arrangements
  • Facilitate Self Advocacy & Peer Support
  • Support the recruitment and employment of Personal Assistants including the administration of their PA Finder service
  • Provide independent living and advocacy support to enable individuals to live independently in their own homes
  • To support engagement and promotional events relevant to services
  • Work as part of the team in order to ensure the delivery of services to the highest possible standard including providing admin, finance and reception cover as required

Key Responsibilities:

  • To ensure an awareness of legislation changes relevant to Health and Social Care services and Health Complaints Advocacy provision
  • To work within the team to ensure that they discharge its full responsibilities under Health and Safety Legislation
  • To be office based and undertake visits to customers’ homes and other relevant locations
  • To suggest and attend appropriate meeting and events as a representative of the organisation
  • To promote them and their activities and contribute to the development of their internal policies and external (publicity/communication) materials as required
  • To report to your line manager any changes required to keep policies, procedures, protocols and information materials up-to-date
  • To actively use their systems to collect and maintain up to date records and statistical information related to the functions of the post and provide case studies when required
  • To work with trustees, staff and volunteers to develop their standards of service with a view to sharing best practice across the team and delivering the highest standards of service
  • To work with trustees, staff and volunteers to ensure they discharge their full responsibilities under Health and Safety Legislation

The Candidate:

  • At least two years’ direct experience of providing advocacy and/or advice either in an employed or voluntary capacity
  • Knowledge, understanding and awareness of the role of Advocacy
  • Understanding of the policy and legislative framework in which Independent Health Complaints Advocacy and Social Care is delivered including Independent Living, The Care Act, and Carers Support and Direct payments.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Social Model of disability along with an awareness of the issues faced by disabled adults, children, older people and carers and the people they care for
  • Understanding of good practice in advocacy information and advice provision
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Effective interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with people from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences
  • Effective organisational and time management skills
  • Ability to understand complicated information and be able to make it more understandable to others
  • Ability to maintain clear professional boundaries
  • Ability to keep abreast of changes in legislation and policy impacting on the people that SILC works with and the ability to disseminate complex information
  • Ability to monitor own work and performance
  • Ability to work in a team, as well as work and on own initiative
  • Excellent writing and numeracy skills
  • Ability to use a range of IT systems such as Microsoft Word
  • A clear understanding of and commitment to equal of opportunities
