Job Title: Cook

Based: Ruskin Lodge, Swinburne Road, St Helens

Salary: £17,361 – £19,174 per annum (inclusive of unsocial hours supplement)

Job Type: Part Time, Permanent

Working Hours: 29.75 hours per week on a rota system, 2 days on 2 days off, 7:30am – 5:00pm including Weekends & Bank Holidays

Are you a Cook wanting to work in a friendly supportive atmosphere where your healthy, nutritious and balanced meals will be an important and vital part of a guests’ experience whilst staying in our modern respite care home? Would you welcome working on days and weekends with no evenings on a rota averaging 29.75 hours a week – 2 days on, 2 days off – 7.30 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.?

Our 22 bedded home is purpose built, fully resourced, in attractive landscaped gardens providing high quality services covering daily living activities to older people.

The Role:

  • Planning, preparing and cooking meals/snacks for guests taking account of dietary and allergy requirements
  • Planning, preparing and cooking for a Day Centre held in the Home 3 days a week
  • Ordering of Food/supplies and monitoring kitchen stocks
  • Record Keeping
  • Supervision of Kitchen Assistants who also load regeneration ovens for a meals on wheels service
  • Ensuring high standards of hygiene and cleanliness are maintained
  • Ensuring high standards of safety are maintained

Key Responsibilities:

  • To prepare and cook breakfast for up to 23 guests and to assist with serving breakfast.
  • To prepare and cook lunches and evening meal for up to 23 guests each day and lunch for up to 40-day centre guests three times per week.
  • Prepare tea/coffee/snacks throughout the day as required to visitors to Ruskin Lodge
  • Prepare buffets for meetings, special events, etc.
  • Ensure adequate supplies of food, materials and equipment are maintained and ordering of the same
  • Ensure all rules and regulations/legislation are complied with in order to provide a safe, hygienic and efficient working environment within the kitchen
  • Maintain cleanliness of all equipment and machinery
  • Liaise with Welfare Centre regarding Home Meals Service, ie number, menus, special diets, etc.
  • Stock control of both home meals and frozen meal deliveries in walk-in freezer.
  • To plan menus for up to 5 weeks in advance
  • To plan a varied, nutritious well-balanced diet.
  • To be aware of special dietary needs of guests eg low fat, diabetic, soft diet

General Requirements:

In your role you will be able to demonstrate the skills gained from a level 4 Award in Managing Food Safety in Catering or equivalent which the job requires. Two years’ experience of working as a Cook in a busy kitchen and understanding of different dietary needs and allergen awareness is essential.
