Job Title: Electrical Engineer

Location: Milton Park, Abingdon (OX14)

Salary: Competitive, depending on experience

The Company has unlocked a new route to scalable fusion power that is cost-effective and does not require huge infrastructure and capital expenditure. The technology could revolutionise the world’s energy production – it will be possible to produce more energy, more cheaply and with fewer harmful side effects (e.g. long term nuclear waste or carbon emissions).

The Role:

The candidate will be part of the Electrical Engineering team. The team is responsible for the design, installation and commissioning of a large number of pulsed power supplies as well as installation and commissioning of the controls, diagnostics and safety systems for the ST40 programme. Due to the Company’s fast-growing pace they need to further develop the engineering team to meet the requirements of the ST40 program and future systems.

Duties will include:

The Electrical Engineer will work alongside the senior electrical engineer and other electrical engineers to develop the current program of power supplies on ST40 including Toroidal Field, Merging Compression, Solenoid, Pusher BvL and BvU. In addition, prepare for the future upgrades of BvU, SX, Divertor and BvM power supplies.

The duties will include

  • High power busbar installation including temperature monitoring systems.
  • Earthing layout for stared system capable of handling high power impulse currents.
  • Installation and commissioning of high voltage power supplies and high current power supplies.
  • Commission and installation of PLC and HMI for equipment interlocks and LabVIEW for power supply control and remote user interface communications.
  • Writing of risk assessments and installation method statements for proposed installations
  • Liaising with other engineers responsible for cooling water systems, vacuum and physics parameters.
  • Liaising with various manufacturing companies.
  • Internally the post holder will communicate with the Electrical Engineering Group manager, other mechanical and electrical engineers working within the Company.
  • Externally the post holder will be responsible for the management of electrical engineering manufacture contracts and will therefore have to liaise with manufacturers and component suppliers.

Hazard-specific / Safety-critical duties

This job includes the following hazards or safety-critical activities which will require successful pre-employment health screening through the Company’s Occupational Health Service before the successful candidate will be allowed to start work:

  • Working at heights
  • Infrequent late working
  • Driving on Company business
  • Working with Ionising Radiation

Personal Skills and Attributes:

Essential:

  • Engineering HND/Degree qualified with an electrical bias
  • Confident reading and interpreting electrical drawings
  • High level user of Microsoft office
  • Broad based engineering experience
  • 3D or 2D CAD experience. E.g. AutoCAD, Solid Edge or other.
  • Good fault-finding skills, using oscilloscopes and other test equipment.
  • Fully conversant with engineering drawings and circuit diagrams.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Knowledge, understanding and application of BS7671 and Electricity Safety.
  • Power electronics experience, including simulation and design, and hands-on experience.
  • Using SCRs, IGBTs, Supercapacitors and other power components.

Desirable:

  • PCB Creation, using OrCAD, Eagle CAD or other.
  • Usage of Electrical circuit simulators for electrical simulation. E.g. PLECS or PSPICE or other.
  • Experience in high voltage and high current pulsed power supplies and topologies.
  • Experience in PLC and communication interfacing.
  • Experience of using temperature monitoring (PT100, PT1000, Thermocouple) systems.
  • Previous experience within a scientific facility or similar.
