Job Title: Estate Services Manager

Location: Maidstone, Kent

Salary: Circa £50,000

Job Type: Permanent, Full-Time

Working Hours: 40 hours each week

With History dating back over one thousand years, the Castle was sympathetically developed by its last private owner, Lady Baillie who lived in the castle between 1926 and 1974. Upon her death in 1974, the castle was left to a Foundation, who manages the estate today.

As well as the Castle, the Fairfax Hall, Maidens Tower and Battel Hall provide venues for conferences, and corporate events and they have Bed and Breakfast accommodation and five holiday cottages to supplement their revenue.

The Estate comprises 1200 acres in total; 500 acres of grounds, parkland, formal gardens, nature trails, woodland gardens and a 9 hole golf course. The remainder are managed farm business tenancies and grazing.

The Role:

Reporting to the Chief Executive and part of the Strategic Management Team the core purpose of the job is to be responsible for all support services on the estate, achieving excellent stewardship of the buildings and land, and offering responsive services to the internal customer, making the best of the combined resources of the maintenance, grounds and garden teams.

  • Facilities manager (who deals with all planned and reactive maintenance)

  • Grounds supervisor
  • Head gardener
  • Estate Ranger

The Candidate:

Likely to be RICS qualified with around 10 years experience, ideally gained in a Heritage environment

  • Credible and knowledgeable, able to advise the Chief Executive and the trustees on building and land matters.
  • Well organised, competent administrator able to juggle multiple priorities and support team leaders.
  • Accustomed to working with internal customers at a senior level and to influencing external authorities.
  • Excellent people management skills; able to develop and lead teams and to achieve high levels of productivity and good morale.
  • Resilient, flexible and pragmatic, able to cope with the unpredictability of a 365 day environment.
  • Able to operate within a resource-constrained environment; the castle is a charity, and relies on generated income to sustain its operations.

The working week will usually be 40 hours, Monday to Friday, but some weekend working in support of events may be required, as may emergency time out of hours.
