Job Title: Healthcare Assistant

Location: Haywards Heath, West Sussex

Salary: £15,486 per annum FTE

Job type: Part-Time, Fixed term contract (6 to 12 months)

Hours: Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm term time only

Closing date: 22nd October 2021

Great Walstead School is an Independent Prep School for children aged 2½ – 13 years situated in 300 acres of woodland, with excellent facilities and a caring family atmosphere. You will be joining a thriving prep school in the heart of Sussex with a friendly, hardworking and supportive team.

The Role:

  • To support and assist the School Nurse to provide a clinically effective, high quality service of nursing care to pupils and first aid care to all members of the school community.
  • To assist the School Nurse with administrative duties.
  • To provide first aid care and treatment to pupils when required
  • To cover the Medical room and be the first port of call for first aid cover when the Nurse is unavailable.

Key Responsibilities:

  • To assist in attending to the clinical needs of all who come in to the Surgery.
  • To communicate as appropriate with the School Nurse, parents and those who have care of pupils.
  • To be aware of, and implement, routine procedures as outlined in the medical policy.
  • To adhere to Individual Health Care Plans for pupils with specific health care needs.
  • To actively support the holistic well-being of all pupils.
  • To assist with ensuring a smooth running and efficient health service.
  • To ensure comprehensive notes and records are made in relation to incidents/accidents, and reported to relevant staff as necessary, in accordance with the school’s safeguarding procedures
  • To assist with maintaining medical records accurately, confidentially and safely ensuring a rapid retrieval system is in place.
  • To assist with ensuring relevant medical advice/guidance notes are prepared for pupils for trips and outings as necessary.
  • To assist health checks with external agencies.
  • To record the dispensing of drugs following school protocols.
  • To follow procedures for safe disposal of clinical waste.
  • To ensure safe storage and use and disposal of medical supplies and drugs.
  • To assist with maintaining treatment room stock, hygiene and housekeeping standards.
  • To comply with Great Walstead’s School’s operating policies and procedures as issued from time to time, particularly the School’s Safeguarding Policy.
  • To positively contribute to the performance management process and to the job holder’s own personal development – particularly in respect of CPD.
  • To carry out any other duties that might reasonably be required from time to time according to the needs of the school and as directed by the Deputy Head and/or Head.

The ideal candidate will have/ be:

Essential

  • GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Maths
  • BTEC or NVQ (or equivalent) qualification in Healthcare
  • Experience of working within education, childcare provision or paediatric healthcare
  • Possess good basic office administration knowledge – including ICT (MS Office- especially Outlook, Word and Excel and experience of utilising databases).
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to relate well to people on all levels with sensitivity, tact and diplomacy
  • Clear empathy and understanding of boys’ and girls’ development and needs
  • Excellent people skills, with a natural ability to build relationships quickly and to interact in a pleasant and professional manner with staff, parents, pupils and other stakeholders
  • The ability to work under pressure whilst maintaining a sense of perspective and humour
  • Full current UK driving licence and use of a car
  • Possess a high level of personal integrity, with proven experience of handling sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy and with complete respect for confidentiality
  • Work within the School’s health and safety policy to ensure a safe working environment for staff, students and visitors

Desirable

  • First Aid Instructor certificate
  • Paediatric First Aid qualified
  • Experience in Paediatrics or working with children
