Job Title: Planning Apprentices – (Service Design and Resourcing)

Location: Doncaster, South Yorkshire

Salary: £15,836 Starting salary that will increase

Job type: Full time

Did you know that rail is one of the safest and most eco-friendly means of transport, with one single freight train being able to carry enough materials to build 30 houses! Our services replace the equivalent of over 22 million truck movements every year, saving 7 million tonnes of carbon emissions!

We have an exciting opportunity for two Apprentices to join us in our Planning and Resourcing teams to start their rail career. Based from our head office in Doncaster, the Apprentices will rotate between different teams to gain a broader understanding of how these functions work. They will rotate between our Service Design, Rostering and Planning, Control and Sales/Customer Service teams.

Alongside this rotation, the candidates will also complete a Level 3 qualification in Business Administration.

The Role

General Duties/Key Responsibilities:

  • The apprentice will start at a team and rotate after 6 months to the next team. These teams are not fixed and can be completed in any order depending on resource needs.
  • The Apprentices will gain lots of experience, including but not limited to;
  • An understanding of the engineering planning process
  • An understanding of the weekly planning process (taking a customer order and turning it into a train on the plan).
  • To understand the weekly diagramming process (putting instructions together for a train driver for their shift).
  • To understand the Long-term planning/diagramming process.
  • An understanding of the systems we use.
  • An understanding of DB Cargo UK hubs and their locations.
  • An understanding of how we roster and diagram our employees so we are able to fulfil customer requirements.
  • An understanding of how our day to day Control team work and the challenges they face.

Qualifications:

  • We are looking for two enthusiastic, confident candidates who are interested in beginning a career in the rail industry.
  • They will have good attention to detail, be customer focussed, process driven and approachable, with the ability to be able to work to deadlines and under pressure.
  • No previous experience is required, however candidates must have GCSE’s at Grade 4/C or above in English and Maths as a minimum

Benefits:

  • In return, we are offering a starting apprentice salary of £15,836. This will increase in increments as the programme and successful candidates develop.
  • The programme is expected to last around 2 years. After this time, dependent on performance, we would hope (dependent on business need) to be able to convert the Apprentices to roles within our team, the current rate of pay for these roles is £27,542, so these are excellent opportunities to begin a successful career. The candidates will be held in the Apprentice role until one of these opportunities arises.

Apprentice Review:

We are really proud of some of our past Apprentices – our current Head of Service Design, Kate Turner, started with us as an Apprentice in 2012 and her career has progressed ever since. This is what Kate has to say;

  • “I would honestly say, doing an apprenticeship changed my life / direction. At 18 years old, I didn’t know whether to go to university and initially I thought I would do the 12-month apprenticeship first and see how it went… 10 years later I have been a “Head of” for five years and still loving every day at work. I very much doubt I would have got the opportunities I have had at such a young age.
  • Benefits: Opportunities to learn new areas of the business, whilst achieving a qualification.
  • Challenges: The challenge of the planning apprentice when I was 18, (honestly), was making people aware that I seriously wanted to progress, I didn’t necessarily fit the “usual” type of employee; this came with hard work and persistence.”
