Job Title: Student Placement – Science

Location: Nantgarw, Cardiff

Salary: £16,000 per annum

Job Type: Full Time, Placement (09:00 to 17:00 Mon-Fri)

Contract Period: July 2019 to August 2020

The company is a customised enzyme discovery, development and manufacturing company based in the UK, with a subsidiary in Illinois, USA. They work with their customers, many of which are the top blue chip food companies, to provide unique enzyme solutions that will help them solve process problems, valorise waste, facilitate a biochemical reaction or deliver competitive advantage through using a unique product.

Role Overview:

You will be working on a specific company project to develop enzymes. This will be very much a ‘hands on’ placement and will involve working in the laboratories using various molecular and microbiology techniques. This will help you to develop knowledge of key steps in expression of enzymes including, but not limited to media preparation, plasmid preparation, transformation, expression trials and analysis.

Furthermore, experiments will involve looking at multiple host organisms and potentially, enzyme production within pilot scale fermentation. By the end of the placement, you will have a detailed understanding of enzyme expression at laboratory and commercial scale.

Job Duties:

  • Technically competent in performing Enzyme Activity Assays and interpreting results
  • Technically competent in performing SDS PAGE
  • Technically competent in performing Bradford Protein assays
  • Technically competent in performing microbiology techniques.
  • Planning and organising within and outside of projects
  • Maintaining stock levels of buffer and media
  • Reporting data to NPD scientists in agreed timeline
  • Analyse, interpret and evaluate data and identify results requiring further investigation (seeking advice of senior colleagues as appropriate)
  • Produce reliable, accurate data and keep accurate records of laboratory work undertaken and results.
  • Working closely with New Product Development, Operations and Quality Control and teams when developing new process/technical capabilities
  • Prepare for laboratory tasks using the appropriate scientific techniques, procedures and methods
  • Working flexibly for accommodating out of hours’ project tasks.
  • Demonstrate technical competence in the use of specified instrumentation and laboratory equipment, including calibration where required
  • Support scientists and help carry out tests, research and investigations
  • Ensure maintenance of equipment is carried out to agreed schedules
  • Participate in continuous performance improvement
  • Carry out the responsibilities stated in the Managing Director’s Health & Safety Policy detailed in paragraphs 9 and 10 of his management directives
  • Be conversant with and adopt the procedures stated in the Quality & Environmental Management System and its supporting documents

Key Requirements:

  • Completed a minimum of two years’ as a University undergraduate studying biochemistry, biology, chemistry or a related discipline
  • Demonstrable general laboratory skills
  • Demonstrable an ability to produce accurate and reliable data

Need to know

  • Fundamentals of Enzyme Assays and protein analysis
  • Knowledge of lab equipment
  • Good laboratory practice and housekeeping
  • Microsoft Office
  • Environmental, Health & Safety, Food safety, HACCP & GMP
  • Trained in the awareness and relevance of their individual activities in contributing to food safety, emphasising the importance of effective communication
