Job Title: Children’s Support Worker

Location: Caldwell, Derbyshire, DE12 6RS

Salary: £16,048.50 to £18,798.00 p/a plus 35 days paid annual leave

Hours: Full Time, Permanent

This School in Derbyshire is an independent specialist day and residential school for young people aged 8 to 19 years with severe learning disabilities, autism and associated challenging behaviour.

Students have personalised and individualized programmes, designed by a multi-disciplinary team of professionals to support the young person to make progress, develop skills and engage socially with others.

The Role:

  • To ensure that a young person’s entitlement to a high standard of welfare and safety is met
  • To ensure that a young person’s entitlement to a high standard of teaching and Learning and communication is achieved in association with teachers and therapists
  • To ensure that young people’s entitlement to self-advocacy and safety are met through adopting their preferred communication styles
  • To support the young person in areas of personal hygiene
  • To allow young people time to be independent
  • To advocate on behalf of young people
  • To balance at all times the young person’s actual age with their ability age
  • To work flexibly and cooperatively as part of the care department
  • To establish relationships with young people in accordance with their welfare, educational and therapeutic needs as agreed by the Team around the Child

The Candidate – Essentials:

  • Experience of caring/supporting vunerable people
  • Right to Work in the UK
  • Understanding of issues facing young people with learning disabilities including challenging behaviours
  • Literacy/Numeracy skills in order to record young person’s behaviour
  • Effective Communicator
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Ability to work independently, use own initiative, self motivated
  • To be fit and able to undertake all physical aspects of the role e.g playing
  • Commitment to the wellbeing of the young people
  • Commitment to continuous professional development
  • Positive and proactive approach to training and supervision
  • Flexible, approachable and responsive to change
  • Ability to work shifts (including evenings, weekends and bank holidays)
  • Smart appearance
  • A natural respect of the individuality and dignity of those in your care
  • Show commitment to equality of opportunity at all times and have due respect for the diverse make up of colleagues and those in your care

The Candidate – Desirables:

  • Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare or the ability to achieve it within 2 years of taking up the post
  • Youth Leader Certificate
  • First Aid Certificate
  • Basic Care Practices and understanding of Care Standards
  • Health and Safety awareness and experience
  • Understanding of equal opportunities policy
  • Knowledge of alternative communication tools
  • Interest in Sport and Recreational Activities.
  • Voluntary work in Care sector
  • Working with children and young people/adults who need support
  • Working in a residential school, care home or similar setting
  • Previous experience of learning disabilities and/or challenging behaviour
  • Previous personal care experience
  • Sense of humour
