Job Title: Support Worker – Level One

Location: Sidcup

Salary: £9.50 per hour.

Job type: Full Time/Part Time/Bank available. Working as part of a team to cover a 24/7 rota, including unsocial hours, weekends, holiday periods and sleep-in/night shifts.

The Role:

Providing high quality support and care to individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Empowering them by assisting them to live as independently as possible through a Person Centred approach, by constantly promoting: respect and dignity, choice in all aspects of life, community presence and participation, the right to social relationships and building competencies.

Main Duties/Responsibilities:

Support

  • Supporting service users in maintaining their physical, social and emotional well-being.
  • Providing service users with the highest standards of personal care whilst maintaining their dignity at all times.
  • Maintaining and developing service user’s skills and enhancing their self-esteem.
  • Involving service users in all aspects in their own home, ensuring they are in control by enhancing communication through various strategies and ensuring choice.
  • Continually striving to identify and satisfy individual needs and preferences.
  • Supporting individual to maintain their home environment to the highest standards, including supporting them to complete all household requirements as much as they are able and enabling them to develop their skills further in each area.
  • Supporting individuals in a wide range of activities, in the house, community and on holidays.
  • Implementing and contributing to personal development plans and supporting them to take calculated risks.
  • Safely and responsibly administering medication where required.
  • Taking the responsibility of being an advocate and keyworker.

Finance and Administration

  • Taking responsibility for petty cash.
  • Ensuring service users budget within their means and ensure their finances and valuables are managed effectively and safely.
  • Ensure you follow finance policy and procedures.

Reporting

  • Completing detailed, clear and accurate and factual daily records for service users.
  • Completing monthly records.
  • Completing other daily records to enable analysis of specific areas to enable effective plans to be implemented.
  • Reporting to and seeking advice from senior staff regarding any significant changes including incidents and changes in the service user’s mental/physical health.

Communications and Relationships

  • Using various communication strategies to communicate with service users and enable them to communicate.
  • Advocating and encouraging individuals to self-advocate.
  • Building good rapport with service users whilst maintaining professional boundaries.

Legal, Compliance, Procedural Adherence

  • Ensuring and maintaining the health and safety of service user and staff at all times.
  • Understanding the duty of care and acting upon it at times, if necessary.

Other

  • Driving the company vehicles, when required.

Person Specification:

Qualifications & Academic Skills

  • Strong reading and numeracy skills – Essential.
  • GCSE’s – Essential.
  • College or University degree – Desirable.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and clearly – Essential.
  • NVQ level 2 or above – Desirable.
  • Ability to speak a second language – Desirable.
  • Basic knowledge of good care practices and legislation – Essential.

Experience

  • Minimum 6 months experience of supporting individuals with Autism.

OR

  • Ability to demonstrate an understanding of the basic challenges for individuals with Autism and willingness to learn further – Essential.
  • Previous experience of working with challenging behaviour – Desirable.
  • Understanding the reasons individuals present challenging behaviour – Essential.
  • Knowledge of how to support individuals displaying challenging behaviour – Essential.

  • Ability to plan and organise – Essential.
