The London Borough of Newham has the largest privately rented sector in England with over half of Newham households (60,000) depending on private landlords for their health, safety and welfare. In response to these circumstances, Newham became the first authority to adopt an authority wide landlord licensing in 2013, with nearly 40,000 homes aligned to one of the licensing schemes..

About the Job:

Their Private Sector Housing Standards team are looking for a talented individual to provide holistic support and advice to individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, working to prevent illegal evictions and harassment, taking legal action where necessary.

The postholder will benefit from ‘hands-on’ experience supporting the Private Sector Housing Standards Service and from working with external partners to further develop their knowledge and skills. The postholder will assist in organising meetings and groups of key stakeholders in the private rented sector in order to promote quality, safety and security for tenants in the sector.

Providing a first-class service to tenants, the role delivers a range of intervention strategies such as enforcement, education and advice, aimed at improving the quality, safety and choice of residential accommodation across Newham.

About you:

With a broad understanding of the housing and homeless prevention disciplines within local government, your application will also benefit from displaying knowledge of carrying out investigations and dealing with complaints.

To qualify for the position you will need:

  • Educated at A level or equivalent, or able to demonstrate good literacy & numeracy skills
  • Degree level or similar qualification in housing, law, customer service or information advice and guidance or evidence of extensive experience in a housing related field
  • At least 3 years’ experience of working in, or with, the housing sector
  • Experience of working within a customer focussed environment or customer orientated services
  • Experience of working on campaigns and publicity regarding social issues
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Professional, approachable, confident and empathetic manner whilst maintaining appropriate boundaries
