Role Overview:

A position is available in the HTS magnet team for an Electrical / Electronics Engineer with experience of high power switched mode inverter design, build and test, including pulsed power systems

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design of high current superconducting magnet power supplies and high voltage pulsed power supplies
  • Guiding installation and commissioning of the power supplies on the tokamak
  • Developing HTS / cryogenic pulsed power components
  • Developing safety case, risk assessments and installation method statements for proposed installations
  • Running power electronic simulation studies using PLECSTM
  • Fast-tracking novel circuit ideas from concept through prototypes to real tokamak power systems
  • Design and development of small-scale prototypes to demonstrate technology, hardware and methods needed for power supplies for large HTS magnets, including design of 100 kA-class cables and joints, and magnet protection
  • Liaising with other engineers responsible for HTS conductor characterization, tokamak physics, cryogenics, mechanical integration
  • Internally the post holder will report to the HTS Magnet Development manager and liaise with the Electrical Engineering Group manager, Cryogenic Systems engineer, and other mechanical, electrical and design engineers and working within the company
  • Externally the post holder will liaise with manufacturers, component suppliers and technical consultants in industry and academia
  • The post will involve occasional travel within the UK and overseas

The successful Candidates will have:

Essential

  • PhD, Degree or substantial equivalent experience in Electrical or Electronic Engineering
  • At least two years’ relevant experience at an appropriate level in an industrial manufacturing or technology prototyping environment
  • Power electronics experience, including simulation and design, and hands-on experience, using SCRs, IGBTs, Supercapacitors and other power components
  • Experience with PSPICE, PLECS or equivalent circuit design software
  • Fully conversant with engineering drawings and circuit diagrams
  • Good communication skills
  • Knowledge of current manufacturing methods and materials, understanding and application of BS7671 and Electricity Safety. Fully conversant with engineering drawings
  • Experience of working in a multi-disciplined team of scientists and/or engineers
  • Previous experience within a scientific or industrial product development facility

Desirable

  • Experience very high current pulsed resistive and/or superconducting power supplies
  • PCB Creation, using OrCad, EagleCad or other
  • Experience in high voltage and/or high current pulsed power supplies and topologies
  • Experience in embedded device and/or FPGA programming
  • Experience in PLC and communication interfacing
  • Earthing system experience
  • Experience of using temperature monitoring (PT100, PT1000, Thermocouple) systems
  • The post will involve occasional travel within the UK and overseas
  • CAD experience
  • Good fault-finding skills using electronic test equipment
  • Understanding and awareness of intellectual property
